TRAILS ENTANGLED

A posthuman ambition to support more than humans

TRAILS ENTANGLED

SUMMARY
Trails Entangled is a critical design ambition, which aims to, with a foundation in posthumanist concepts and through design engineering methods, mitigate a local issue while fostering a changed mindset.
The website aims to increasing awareness of the damage being made through human behavior to a specific site, while still welcoming use of the same site. It is based on posthuman concepts, relying on user participation to collect data on trails, damage as well as sighted biota. All reports are dynamically mapped and visualized.
ROLE
Solo Project
MADE WITH
Procreate, Figma.

TRAILS ENTANGLED / ISSUE

The The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation noticed an issue in Änggårdsbergen, a nature reserve in Gothenburg, Sweden. Since the pandemic, increased visits and shared use for hiking and biking, resulting in expanded and deeper trails. This overuse exposed roots, impacting pine trees with shallow systems, causing instability. Consequently, more trees fall during windy conditions.

  TRAILS ENTANGLED / PROCESS

They did not only identified the issue but also proposed a potential solution: installing boardwalks to separate visitors from the vulnerable underlying bed. However, this solution focuses solely on human interests without addressing the root cause. In turn, the aim of the project is to, in a posthumanist manner, mitigate the issue at site while also fostering a changed mindset.

  TRAILS ENTANGLED / FINAL

The two components together represent the trails in the area, and document sightings of plants and animals. Through user participation in reporting new trails, animal sightings, and damage, the aim is to foster a shared sense of enjoyment and responsibility.

This approach encourages community engagement while providing space for healing and collective care.
