APONEDIA

An exploration of social isolaition and passive communication

APONEDIA

SUMMARY
Not only in future deep space journeys will people find themselves in isolation, but many fates on earth are alike. Being in health care, at sea, or remote research stations, a connectivity to loved ones is a remedy to the psychologically tedious manifestation of loneliness. Meanwhile, the technological developments and the resulting high level of connectivity most of us live in, is emerging to be stressful for many. It seems to put a pres-sure on the mind.

Could a more abstract, passive, and asynchronous form of connectivity make it easier to be close to loved ones in isolation, without demanding constant connectivity and instant reaction?

ROLE
Solo project, with guidance from NASA and SISCA

MADE WITH
Procreate, After Efffects, Fusion 360, KeyShot

APPLIED SKILLS
Project Mgmt, Sketching, Protyping, 3D-Modeling, 3D-Printing

APONEDIA / PROCESS

In effort to raise questions of isolation, the aim became to create a passive representation —a balance that doesn’t demand immediate attention but still responds to human presence.

These projections, influenced by human presence, becomes an abstract representation of someone.

Visually, by affecting shape, movement, or colour we can see traces from physically far away.

APONEDIA / FINAL

The table. Practical almost to the mundane, something we spend most of our day around without even thinking about, but it is also charged with certain values of togetherness. It might provide a place to work or feed, it could also be a place of social interactions, and on the contrary, emptiness.

Aponedia is executed through a minimalistic take on ancient architecture. In terms of forms and proportions, the goal is to provide a clean, timeless, slate rather than something that stick out. Instead, material, its depth, and the exploration of light, is what makes it unique.

The seating works out of the same design language. The primary form is not the primary force to define it, but again the depth of material and light is.

Functionally, Aponedia integrates proximity sensors around its edge. The presence of human will in long term affect the projection of the table. In combination, a twin table, close to a loved one will equally affect the projection.

In a way it could be compared to digital wear of the surface.
