FRISTAD / ISSUE

The Million Program, a housing development initiative by the Swedish state in the 1970s, led to the creation of large housing complexes that today are often criticized for fostering socially isolating environments.

Miljonprogrammet, by Jens S Jensen. 1973, Hammarkullen, Gothenburg.

FRISTAD / CONCEPTS

To address these issues, concepts from urban planning, particularly those advocated by Jan Gehl, can be applied to develop new design solutions.

These concepts include soft edges, which promote engaging street fronts; conversation landscapes that encourage social interaction; considerations of senses and human scale to create more comfortable and relatable environments; and the incorporation of temporality, culture, and climate into urban design.

FRISTAD / STAKEHOLDERS

Furthermore, a co-design approach emphasizing close collaboration with stakeholders is crucial for creating more inclusive and responsive urban spaces.

This includes building relations and harmony with the municipal, producer, and users.
